Course Development

The development of training content – course development – can seem daunting at times. Course development may be as simple as creating an outline in Word or as complicated as creating instructional systems blending several learning modalities that are coordinated through a custom learning portal.

When faced with course development, here are few things to consider:

  • Business Need: As a rule, the genesis of all course development should be a business need, like sales skill or negotiation skills development. Having a well-defined business need creates a solid foundation for developing course content. For less-defined business needs, such as onboarding, it’s likely that more subject-matter experts will need to be involved.
  • Business Case: Following business need identification, it’s important to create a case explaining why course development should be part of the solution to address the business need. There are many ways to go about changing human behavior, and developing a training course is one of the options.
  • Existing Content and Resources: Honestly evaluate what the company already has in place. Is there any content? What are the strengths and weaknesses of existing training content? Are there any resources like learning management systems or an internal training process that can be leveraged?
  • Audience: Consider more than just titles and job descriptions. Factor in the context in which the audience will be learning, what motivates them and their predominant learning type. As audiences increase in diversity, additional content may need to be created to satisfy everyone’s learning needs.
  • Scale: Is the training for a single person, a business unit or the whole company? With increased scale, changes to the programs and modes may mean less expense in the long term, but programs may cost more and be more complex in the beginning.
  • Technology: What technology will you use in the creation and delivery of the course? During the creation process this will likely include authoring tools, while training deliverymay need resources like learning management systems and anything from desktop PCs to smartphones. Ultimately, the business need should drive what technology goes into creation and delivery.
